Long Island Outreach

In September 2021 the B&O team began writing lesson plans on the topics Climate Change and Ocean Health, Biofuels, and Renewable Energy and the Ocean, which all involved activities and/or demonstrations. Each of the three lessons included a version for elementary and early middle school students, as well as a version for late middle to early high school students. Initially, the team was partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension Suffolk (CCE) to implement the lesson plans into local schools, but the team is currently seeking new groups to finish the implementation. After completing the lesson plans in Fall 2022, B&O began creating instructional documents to aid teachers in teaching and understanding the lesson plans. B&O is currently in contact with local elementary schools both to provide the teachers with the lesson plans and to plan an elementary science day where the team will work in person with students and teachers to work through some of the topics covered in the lesson plans.

In conjunction with this, the team is also altering the blueprints of the Ithaca PowerHouse to repurpose as a portable sustainability museum. The PowerHouse is a tiny home on a trailer that will feature exhibits on the lesson plans the team is writing, and will be available to the public as an exhibit in Ithaca. B&O was awarded the Build Day Program funding for 2 of the exhibits, the Algae Biofuels exhibit and the Model of Nations' Carbon Emissions. The team plans to construct them in May 2023 on build day. B&O was also awarded future funding by ESW Global that the team will use to construct the remaining exhibits whose designs are currently being planned. B&O is also currently looking to partner with other groups to finish both the planning and construction of the PowerHouse Museum.
