CIRENAS

Since the spring of 2020, the BioImp subteam has been working with CIRENAS (Center for Investigation of Social and Natural Resources), a sustainability education organization based in Costa Rica. CIRENAS uses an anaerobic digester to dispose of human waste, a process that is supposed to produce methane, which can be used as an energy source. However, since the process is not functioning properly, the BioImp team has been working with CIRENAS staff to troubleshoot and figure out what the problem is. In order to approach the problem, the team has conducted research into anaerobic digestion, and compiled a chart of likely factors that are causing the problem, such as acidic feedstock.

The original plan was for the team to travel to Costa Rica, but this was sidelined due to the pandemic. Currently, CIRENAS's anaerobic digester (AD) isn't fully operational because of a lack of visitors coming to the in-person education center. Since the AD needs to be running in order for it to be diagnosed, the team has been working to get back in contact with CIRENAS to return the AD to its operational state.
